World Trade Center Competition
New York, New York
Design Philosophy
Through interaction between people, between man and nature and between structure and nature, the world trade center site will find resolution. We believe such an interaction process will enlighten and explore, with those involved, and those observing, the creation of a new world trade center precinct.
The Towers of Light & Air
We believe that the majority of the site should be dedicated to the American ideals and to the lives that were lost and to those whose were forever changed. We propose the Twin Towers of Light & Air, a memorial that is derived from the world trade center footprints and will rise above the height of the former Twin Towers. The new towers will be enlivened by wind and light, the towers may be occupied at will, an observation platform should be built at the roof top. Individual memorials would be erected commemorating the location of loved ones and could accommodate visitation. Vertical striation would be erected symbolizing the route of emergency personnel. These sacred grounds should remain a peaceful contemplative space. Designed to rotate around their central core, the towers will constantly change position powered by the movement of the wind. The towers will shimmer in the light of the day and become beacons of light by night. The towers will restore the inspirational density of Lower Manhattan returning the pride of New York to itself and the world.
Center of Commerce
We believe that the vitality of Lower Manhattan should be reestablished at the site. We envision a major hall of transportation and center of shops for the path and subway system creating an intermodal station for the 21st century. We believe that the new center should extend the street grid of Lower Manhattan into the site creating an enlivened urban experience, the essence of the New York definition of street as place. We believe that the site should contain several million square feet of office space. These sentry towers should be located to the east of Greenwich Street and be designed to accommodate market demand.
The Memorial Gardens
We believe that the base of the Towers of Light & Air should be dedicated to contemplation, memory, and congregation. The original tower footprints would be reestablished as reflecting pools. An amphitheater would be created between the towers and Greenwich Street. To the north of the towers would be a cultural center, which could accommodate a variety of public-oriented programming uses. This program will be further defined but could include a museum and preforming arts center.
